Rainfall

David was sitting on the loveseat that was leaned up against the window filled wall. He stared out at the dark clouds as if
expecting something momentous to occur. Sitting half a room away at the dining room table of the small apartment was Chuck, bills laid out in front of him, leaning on his hand staring helplessly at the calculator David glanced over at the eighteen year old boy trying to organize the finances so that they would have money to buy groceries and keep the power on. Sighing heavily David looked back outside. Hope sparked as the clouds appeared to thicken before David’s eyes. Anticipation made his foot jump around on the cushion. Click, clack from the calculator was the only noise to be heard in the room. David wondered briefly if they’d ever make it far enough that chuck wouldn’t need to track the bills. They would pay some account to do it for him. He glanced over at the over worked drummer, Chuck was going to have more wrinkles than the band put together at forty, before he was twenty-five. Thunder resonated throughout the room. David looked up at the sky and saw the beginning trickles of rain.
“Chuck,” David said gently as he pulled himself off the loveseat
“Hmm…” Chuck answered, barely acknowledging the bassist David slowly made his way over to him.
“Chuck...” he repeated insistently.
“Yes?” Chuck said still staring down at the calculator, eyebrows knitted together in annoyance
“Chuck” David said yet again, drawing out the name slightly.
“What?’ Chuck snapped, looking up at David.
“It’s raining,” he replied his tone as gentle as ever. Chuck blinked up at him, then his eyes found the window, where it was obvious, that the clouds had finally let the water out. Gently, David took the calculator away from Chuck, setting it on the table, and then gripped the same hand pulled Chuck up. Chuck stood up, free hand running through his hair guiltily. Still holding Chuck’s hand, David pulled the boy towards and out the front door. Chuck let this all happen in silent compliance and didn’t make noise as he was dragged out onto the grass lawn of the apartment building and into the rain. The shock of cool, wet rain water drizzling down Chuck’s cheek did wonders to loosen Chuck’s brow and tighten his grip on David’s hand. David turned to chuck in silence and wrapped his arm around Chuck’s neck, his other hand still clutching Chuck’s hand.
“I’m sorry,” Chuck apologized, guilt from snapping at David showing David shook his head, eyes still kind.
“You take care of us all, baby. It’s just time for a break.”
Chuck sighed, leaning on David’s shoulder with his forehead. David just wrapped his arms around Chuck, letting the warm embrace and cool summer rain relax them both.
“I want to move to Seattle.” Chuck murmured moving his forehead, to line up with David’s. David laughed, lightly and leaned forward to kiss him. The rain continued falling.
